Today's meeting centered around preparing for CSW 55 to be held Feb.22nd - March 4th, 2011.
Our Task Force, "Protect Girls Against Violence" plans a side-event with speakers who will address: advanced education for girls in the sciences, girls in armed conflict, equal access to emplovment and decent work, and evaluating the progress made on the agreed conclusions of session 51. Tasks were divided, and the members will be visiting prospective speakers for our event. A statement, "Promises Made To Girls" has been formulated and distributed to the member organizations for their approval and signature. The document highlights the promises formerly made for the Girl-Child, and what is seen as promises unfulfilled, i.e. unequal access to higher education, forced marriages at an early age, often leading to domestic violence, early pregnancies ending in still born children. Forced labor, including child trafficking, debt bondage, and forced recruitment in armed conflict continue the plight of the Girl-Child. Mass Media contributes to perpetuating negative gender stereotypes through TV programs and advertisements that science and technology is above the skills of girls.
