Meeting held today was to discuss and develop a U.S. Alternative Report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child of the U.S. implementation of Optional Protocol on Sale of Children, Child Prostitution, Child Pornography. The lengthy U.S. report to the UNCRC has many gaps which were noted, for example: a. the best interest of the child is often overlooked in court cases. b. prevention is inadequately addressed; need to explore more the vulnerabilities of children.
c. training needed for judges and police; children are arrested for prostitution in more numbers than being offered support and assistance. d. there are no federally targeted service for sexually exploited children domestically. e. health care facilities need to be more available for children violated. f. importantly, monitoring must be addressed and included in all gov't policies. g. the private sector must also be partners to lessen child violations. h. lack of coordination between federal and state laws which still criminalize children. The NGO report will be reviewed in June, by the UNCRC, with the final review of the gov't report in September 2012.
