Meg's update: Inter-Faith Event: 12-6-2011

Religions for Peace presented its first international seminar, "Religion, Women and Peacebuilding" to promote the strategic engagement of women of faith as agents of peace and security within the framework of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and the UN Peacebuilding Commission. Today's event brought a host of outstanding speakers from all walks of life committed to this goal. Ms. Lakshmi Puri, Assistant S.G. for UN Women, stressed the truth that women must be in the forefront as agents of peace, despite obstacles that will be met along its path. Ambassador Tine Smith, Norway's representative at the UN, highlighted its National Plan on SC.1325, has enshrined the concept of religious freedom for all traditions which has contributed to amicable relationships among all its citizens. Rev. Alfonso Wyatt, spoke forcefully of the need to engage youth, boys and girls, in the quest for peace among all diverse groups. Dr. Suzan D. Cook, U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom was dynamic as a closing speaker, summing up that Peace begins with each of us; Women as advocates for Peacbuilding is a sure way to bring about desired results.
