Today's Panel Discussion took place at the Poland Consulate, addressing the issues of Child protection, from violence, exploitation, and abuse. Children's Rights Advocacy Director, Ms. Jo Becker, spoke of travels that have taken her to many countries, shared stories of child abuse, often the result of family poverty, lack of necessary resources for sufficient livlihood, driving children into sexual exploitation, resulting in horrific violations of their personhood. She told of some progress being made when governments honored their committments made, and safe shelters put in place to rehabiltate the young children, through education, and skill training.
Yvonne Rafferty, Professor of Psychology, from Pace University, presented a comprehensive study of promising prevention policies and programs now in place both here in the United States, through our federal gov't, as also in other developing countries. This gave a breath of hope of limiting, to a degree, this global problem of horrific magnitude. Ms. Raquel, an activist and writer, addressed the Arab Spring Movement, into which, she herself was victimized. With others, she continues to work for justice and protection for trafficked victims.
