At CSW 52, the WGG organized several side-events, as a follow-up to last year's CSW Meeting on "Eliminating Violence Against the Girl-Child; the goals of the events were to review the promising made to Girls: Implementing CSW 51, and how to continue to advance girls issues world-wide. A Panel discussion on the CSW Outcome Document asked the question:
"How were girls treated in the Outcome Document for CSW 52? Opinions varied.
One comment was that girls were included 14 times as opposed to one time in the initial draft, however, they were not included in the areas of participation and decision making. Another statement made was that there needs to be more advocacy to let girls speak for themselves, rather than adults do this for them. Some positives were highlighted in the document; the commission did succeed in calling for a gender analysis at national and international levels.
In short, comments followed that we need to be more proactive about the inclusion of girls in our meetings, our activities, and in the CSW.
The co-chairperson, Ms. Fulya Vekiloglu, gave a summary of the visioning done by an extended steering group following the CSW. She spoke about the need for us to help institutionalize "girls" in the U.N.; the need to develop a protocol about girls for the CRC; to continue our connections with focal points in UN agencies as well as to do more to work with national machineries.
