GEAR Campaign: On-going from March to present

Following the CSW 52 Session, Feb. 25th - March 7th, 2008, the theme of which was:
"Financing for gender equality and the empowement of women", a strong movement was put into place called, "Gender Equality Architecture Reform" to create a stronger women's agency at the U.N. A major victory was realized when governments agreed to move forward on the issue at informal talks in the G.A. Despite on-going interest, the GEAR co-chairpersons have been requested repetitively to clarify and defend recommendations in the draft paper. At this writing, the draft presents four options: 1. maintain the present status quo as its exists; 2. create an autonomous fund/programme; create a department within the Secretariat and 4. create a composite entity. Women's groups throughout the world have been giving feedback to the chairs relating to the four options; when consensus has been agreed upon, a final paper will be presented to the G.A. for what is hoped will be a victory for Gender Equality at the United Nations.
