Panel presenters were Ms. Marta Pais, Special Rep. on Violence against Chidlren, Ambassador Momen, Permanent Rep. from Bangladesh, Ms. Bissell, Unicef, and Mr. Brand, Director, AID 4th World. The relationship between Extreme Poverty and Violence Against Children was the focus of today's panel. Extreme poverty is felt by those who endure it as a state of ongoing violence; associated with marginalziation and stigmatization, it compromises the enjoyment of children's rights. Social exclusion and extreme poverty are fertile ground for violence against children and enhances risks of abuse and exploitation. From a child's rights perspective, it is important to move beyond sectoral approaches and address the root of inequities, i.e, denied education, forced child labor, early marriages, harmful FGM to mention a few. To correct these injustices toward children, families and communities are critical in overcoming inequity and situations of violence.
Objectives of the Panelists were to raise awareness of the relationship between poverty & violence; physical violence suffered by children which compromise the MDGs, and the importance of families and communities as agents in bringing about protection for children.
