Meg's update: February 20th, 2009

Event at UN Conference Rm. 2: Dr. Asha Rose-Migiro, Deputy Secretary Genral of the U.N.
Theme: "Ending Violence against Women in Conflict Siuations: a Global Challenge of Our Time".
This was a special event for us as several of our sisters who have served in Africa knew of
Dr. Migiro. She served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation from 2006-2007- the first woman in the United Republic of Tanzania to hold that position since its
independence in 1961. Prior to this appointment, she served as Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children for five years. She was well qualified to address the topic on women in conflict situations. Dr. Migiro began by saying one in three women throughout our world are violated daily. The reasons are well known. The gender factor, lack of opportunities
for education, lack of equality in her home, in the community, and in the work place. The global challenge as Dr. Migiro pointed out is the need for awareness among all parties, and the political will to change in order that just relationships among all prevail. Sisters Janice, Becky and I attended this event.
