Meg's update: March 5th. UN International Women's Day

The United Nations celebrated International Women's Day with a host of outstanding speakers. Leading the program was the Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon. As always, the Secretary General came through with his usual charm, evident humility, and strong conviction on the human rights of women and children, the which he has repeatedly championed on every occasion. He again repeated there can be no tolerance of any sort that discriminates, or dehumanizes, the person of woman. He was great (my addition). Dr. Coomaraswamy, Special Representative to the SG on Armed Conflict; she spoke of the evils within conflicts that target women and children worldwide. Professor Yakin Erturk, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women addressed the question of impunity given officials and perpetrators that is still the cause for unequal progress despite many efforts on so many fronts, and the goal of so many active agencies. The last speaker was William Lucy, UN Justice Commission for Human Rights. His said crimes against women in the workplace average around 15%, perpetrators being ones co-workers. Mr. Lucy ended by saying an unjust economic structure figures in the overall problems affecting women workers.
