Protecting Children from Child Labor: The Power of Education was the theme of today's side-event. The Tribal Link Foundation sponsored this most informative session. Speakers from Paraquay. Bolivia, Brazil, India, and a representative from I.L.O. spoke to this issue. Mr. Carlos Condori, told at length the poor response from the gov't of Paraquay, as children were deprived of their basic human needs, and dangerous work they were forced into to help their families.
Ms. Elena Gaildo, I.L.O. stressed the many conventions in place to protect children from hazardous work which were not implemented in some countries. A serious problem continues in rural villages where educational opportunities are lacking on all levels. She proposed a need for bi-lingual education for all children. Hipolito Accel told of how children had to daily plow through garbage dumps in search of food to eat, or articles to sell for a livlihood. His corrective, listen to the wisdom of indigenous people, respect them, and together work for social & economic recovery. Mr. Bhuwan Ribhu, diirector of Children's Village, where children are their own leaders, carry out their own assembly, and spearheading free education for all. Marvelous center.
