Meg's Update: May 6th: WGG Membership Meeting

A year in review of our WGG activities was given by Mary Ann Swain, our co-chair. The review covered concrete actions taken by task force members to keep "Promises Made to Girls" alive through continual advocating for universal education, health improvements, protection on all levels for girls, and gender equality throughout a girl's life cycle. Short clips from a film "Women in War" was introduced, and addressed by Ms. Ritha Bavaka, from the DR Congo. She is seeking partners and funding to assist the thousands of women and children who continue to be violated daily, especially in the eastern part of the Congo. A briefing was given on the three day UNICEF - NEW SCHOOL event in April. Adolescent Girls-Cornerstone of Society featured input on 'New Approaches Realizing the Rights of Girls'; 'Girls and the Global Economy'; 'Keeping Girls at the Center. The exchange of speakers and audience participation was excellent and great energy to carry out the recommendations remains high. The UN Interagency Task Force on Adolescent Girls launced at the end of 2009 holds further progress and advancement for our adolescent girls. Marta Pais, SR on Violence against Children will be our guest speaker in June.
