An excellent group of panelists addressed the many issues set forth in the Millennium Goals for Children, yet to be realized. Problems highlighted were: children's basic human rights were not met when education was denied, inequities in personal development, lack of sufficient progress on child and maternal health, because effective prevention and treatment at the family and community levels were not high priority. Another important failure has been governments lack of political will to implement policies and legislations signed onto; reference was made to the CRC.
Recommendations stressed were the vital important of local families and communities to be the principal actors in advancing the full development for their children; this also means listening to children's voices as they express their needs and concerns. Networking with other community groups is seen to be ways in which future progress can be realized. Partnerships with Civil Society is another way ahead. The Media should be used to reach a larger audience on children's issues, and positive ways in which their lives can be fulfilled. In a word: Equity & Justice, Accountability, Committment and Political Will toward all children.
