October has been devoted to reviewing the progress and remaining challenges since the adoption of UN Security Council, Res. 1325 - Women, Peace and Security Implementation. Yesterday's event opened with Ambassador Wenaweser, of Liechtenstein to UN, welcoming the guests, and further committing his country to ongoing implementation of the resolution. Bandana Saathi, Nepal, shared what has worked for her country on the field; more women are conscious of their human rights, but what is lacking is no national plan where women's voices are heard. Marie Butler, Peace Women/WILPF/discussed recent analysis on language and intent of 1325. Sarah Taylor, NGO Working Group, WPS, research from grassroots organizations, with their problems and recommendations for future implementation listed as: strong, concerted leadership on women, systematic approach to WPS, and concrete monitoring of gaps in implementation.
Continued violeance threatens the future of millions of women and their communities, women marginalized from formal decision-making processes, and gender considerations rarely inform policy and practice of the international community.
