Meg's update: CSW55: Follow-up: Girls Stand Up 4-26-11

Yesterday's Side-Event featured Megha Cherian and Hee Jung Yoon, daughters of immigrant families, from India and Korea, who shared the highlights of their leadership training program received at at the Center for Asian American Children and Families, that prepared them for a presentation at CSW55, "Girls Stand Up". Through their training program, and with the backing of their parents, these young women are eager to be voices for other youth disadvantaged often through discrimination, lack of education, language skills, and family poverty. They have set high goals, for themselves, and equally important for them, is to continue to advocate so that all girls, here and abroad, are respected and given equal opportunities to advance and become future leaders in the career of their choice. Ms. Vanessa Leung, Deputy Director of CACF, spoke briefly of the objectives of the center which were: Policy Advocacy to improve policies for Asian families by targeting elected officials; Youth Leadership to empower both boys and girls to become advocates for just causes; Parent Education to assist families better understand their responsibilities toward their children and in community.
