The President of the 66th Session of the UN, Mr. Nassir Al-Nasser, sent a greeting to participants of today's event, stressing the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty. He reiterated to Member States and partners that prioritizing gender equality and women's empowement remains one of the United Nations fundamental objectives.
Ms. Aldijana Sisic, Campaign Manager, UNITE to end VAW opened her presentation by saying the crux of the campaign is that a life free from violence is a human right. Statistics show 70% of women have experienced violence in its multiple forms sometime during their life; impunity for perpetrators continues globally; Member States must uphold treaties signed onto. Ms. Mavic Galleza from GNWP, brought to attention the existing SCR 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889 landmark and political framework for promotion and protection of women and children, each furthering basic security to end sexual violence against civilians to achieve military ends. Appointment of a Special Rep. for the deployment of advisors to situations of concern has had positive results.
