The Working Group on Girls is now certified as A 501(c)3 Corp, with benefits and responsibilities agreed to. The mission statement was reviewed to acquaint new members with the overall objectives: to promote the human rights of the girl child in all areas and stages of her life; advance the rights and status of girls, assisting them to develop their full potential as women.
Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues was our guest speaker highlighting the ongoing gender inequality both for women and children in all aspects of their lives. She stressed the importance of education as key in bringing about desired change. She shared an example of courage set forth by a young teenager who opposed her father who refused education for his daughter. The girl bought a cow, and threatened to return the animal to the original family if further opposed. Needless to say, the youth won out! Following the presentation, Task Force chairpersons reported on their planned activities for CSW 56, activities to lessen violence against girls through combating human trafficking; statements prepared and recommendations submitted for enactment.
