Meg's update: Things that Make for Peace: 10-26-11

Today's event was memorable and inspirational as Fr. Michael Lapsley, South African Anglican priest and social justice activist, shared his experiences mobilizing faith communities, to oppose apartheid to support the 1990 liberation struggle; this resulted in a bomb injury sent by the apartheid regime in which he lost both hands, and the sight in one eye. He told of how his recovery was made possible through a sacred space he found through the support and love of others; the creation of "Institute For Healing Memories" was born. He says, "Today, my own work lies in the field of healing memories -creating safe and sacred spaces where people can begin the journey of acknowledging and letting go of that which is destructive inside them and taking from the past that which is lifegiving."The next speaker was Ambassador Chowdhury, former Under-Secretary and outstanding champion of Peace over War responsible for the UN International Decade for Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010, and the ground breaking UN Security Council 1325 on women, peace and security. His message was also a highlight of this event.
