Meg's update: UN Trafficking of Persons:10-24-11

Ms. Joy Ezeilo, Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, addressed The Third Committee of 66th Session of the GA. She stated her mandate tasks includes promoting the effective application of international norms and standards in combating this modern form of slavery. She has been advocating the importance of 5Ps (protection, prosecution, punishment, prevention, international cooperation and partnership), and the 3Rs, (redress, recovery and reintegration) and 3Cs (capacity, cooperation and coordination) as fundamental guiding principles aimed at protecting the human rights of trafficked persons. Despite her many efforts, in many States, trafficked persons are not provided with remedies as a matter of right, but only with ad hoc measures that continue violations of basic human rights, such as lack of received compensation, access to information, legal assistance, residence status; at worst, many trafficked persons are wrongly identified as irregular migrants, detained and deported. Recommendations made to governments included scaling up capacity building, trainings for police, naval, immigration officials, judges, and labour inspectors.
