Meg's update: June 16: Panel discussion: Rights of the Child

A special panel discussion on "Child Participation" in preparation for the 64th General Assembly
Resolution on the Rights of the Child, was held today at the UN. The speakers detailed that children's participation in one of the guiding principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child as contained in Article 12 of the CRC. As such it is one of the most important rights for children as it enables them to express their views and opinions, receive information, involve themselves and participate in all matters that affect their own lives - in keeping with their age and maturity. Respecting the right of the child to participate has benefits for the child, the family, the community, the school, and the State. It is a win-win situation. It was further emphasized that children mature in a holistic way as they enter into discussions that affect their own lives, and can be part of decisions that relate to their well being.
