Update on Meg's May 18th: Memorial: Victims of Slavery

A most interesting session was held at the UN this morning to honor the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade reaching back to early centuries, and to honor a General Assembly resolution taken in December, 2007, entitled: Permanent Memorial to the Victims of Slavery and Transatlantic Slave Trade. Representatives from the countries of Sudan, Haiti, Sierra Leone and Grenada addressed, in poignant language, the tragedy of slavery, racial prejudice and the lingering consequences of and trade in Africans supplied to the colonies of the Americas and beyond. The Permanent Memorial will be an architecturally designed sculpture, embodying each affected regions of transatlantic slave trade; the commemorative figure will be built on the ground of the U.N. Headquarter. Mr. Russell Simmons was named as the Ambassador of Good Will for this project. The Memorial is scheduled to be completed September 2012.
