The Pan Pacific and Southeast Asia Women's Association sponsored a workshop at the Church Centre entitled: "Poverty, Health, and Partnership. The keynote speaker was Jacqueline Ogega, Program Director for Religion and Peace. Jacqueline shared some of her early childhood experiences in Kenya. She was born in a poor family, but with parents who treasured her and taught her to esteem herself amid criticisms leveled at her from villagers because of her gender.
Her parents went without basic necessities to see that she was educated and had the necessary tools to advance in life. She spoke from experience of being poor, and the consequences that being poor leads to other physical health problems, seen so evident in Africa in the AIDS epidemic. She encourged the participants to partner with other groups addressing like problems, both at the UN and elsewhere. Jacqueline's message was well received, and her appeal touched hearts.
