On Thursday, we had the gift of Janice McLaughlin's presence in the office for an "off the record" conversation with friends in Washington interested in Zimbabwe. Janice told very powerful and tragic stories about what has been going on in Zimbabwe since the first elections and painted a discouraging picture of what is likely to happen next. The economic situation is so bleak that people are literally spending all their time and energy trying to survive. Meanwhile, power remains concentrated in the hands of a few powerful people who are benefiting from the status quo.
Those were came were very happy to have the opportunity to talk with Janice. Several had been in Zimbabwe for the elections in March and had been following events there very closely.
Also last week I had the strange experience of being filmed for a few days by a German crew making a documentary for public television about the nuclear arms race and the peace movement. They filmed one segment at a "staff meeting" - and were impressed that we could so quickly get into serious conversation! We actually got a little work done "under the lights!" thanks, everyone.
