Meg's update: 6-14-10: Transnational Efforts Against Crime

Today's panel discussions highlighted the urgency to create synenergies among all MDG advocates, as related to: health services on all levels; transparency in fund allocations, eliminate fees for education in order all that children may receive basic schooling; women should be featured on all levels. Importantly, it was emphasized that all the MDG goals should be worked on as an integrated whole. At the High Level Meeting that followed at the GA, and in preparation for the October Meeting to be held in Vienna, the Draft Declaration named four important areas to be advanced. 1. Reiterate commitment to achieve universal adherence to the Palermo Convention and Protocols; strengthen international and regional cooperation. 2. Call upon Member States to work together in a concerted and holistic manner for common and shared responsibility. 3. Welcome the fact that 154 States from all regions have become parties to the Convention, and urge States not yet on board to consider acceding to the Convention (OP 18 Res. 64/179) 4. Underline the importance of providing technical assistance to countries most seriously affected by transnational organized crime.
