This is a short piece regarding the UN Department of Public Information Briefing held on Thursday, January 15, 2009.
The session featured Ambassador Sophia Clark, the coordinator of the Cabinet of the President of the General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto. Amb. Clark immediately invited questions from the floor. Most of the questions posed revolved aroung the Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System and the Global Financial Crisis.
I was able to raise a question regarding the integration of ecological issues and Climate Change concerns with work being developed in the above mentioned fields. This question was welcomed and its importance noted. The Ambassador is keenly aware of the need for an integrated approach to the global problems which threaten the peace, security and well being of all of humanity as well as the entire life community. She said, however, that the Cabinet needs help in the formulation of these concerns and invited individuals and groups to submit papers in this regard. Papers will be posted on General Assembly website.
Another topic of interest was reforming the Security Council so that it reflects the will of the United Nations as expressed by the General Assembly. Presently the Security Council obstructs rather than facilitates the ends of the UN in many cases.
