Meg's updaate: December 8th, 2008

Today, my colleague Winifred Doherty and I had an appointment with Joyce Kafanabo, Minister Plenipotentiary from the Permanent Mission of the United Repbulic Tanzania. Ms. Joyce is in the office of SADC, headed this year by the president of Tanzania. We spoke of how pleased we all are in learning that SADC Heads of State had signed on to the Protocol on Gender and Development in August of this year, and how this protocol will strengthen inclusion of gender equality and equity in National Constitutions. We shared the activities we have been carrying out for gender equality, and asked Joyce to support our efforts as we prepare for CSW 53.
She spoke from her experience the need for education for children whatever the family situation is; parents also must value education for their girls especially. Another point stressed was the importance of following up with countries that have signed on to documents and what implementation has been done.
