Gold Mining in Tanzania

Last week, Evans Rubara, a friend of Jean Pruitt from Tanzania was in Washington to talk about gold mining there (see recent NewsNotes articles). Though his visit was really short we had two very good meetings - one with Scott Cardiff of Earthworks, who was very interested in collaborating with Evans -- and the other with Joshua Klemm from the Bank Information Center, who could be helpful in terms of connecting the Tanzanians with appropriate people in the World Bank and Africa Development Bank. evans brought with him to our meetings three young people who were great -- from the Beehive Collective (have you seen their intricate posters about a variety of issues?), Protest Barrick (one of the gold companies working in Tanzania) and the student Trade Justice Campaign.
