Conference on Legislative Reform to Achieve Human Rights was held at the UN Plaza Hotel.
3 panels of speakers addressed three different issues relating to women and children's rights under the law. Ms. Marta Pais, director of Innocenti Research Centre addressed promising approaches toward achieving Children's Rights. She highlighted legislation needs political will and monitoring during the entire life cycle of the child, from birth onward. Ambassador Monshira Khattah from Egypt told of legislation being carried out on many levels in her country, and importantly international treaties signed on by her government are being enforced.
Mr. Vincent Buono from Nigeria some efforts toward enforcement has been seen through the training of judges, and campaigns carried out to create attitudinal changes in the population.
Another speaker from Namibia stressed the role of parliament ws to monitor laws agreed upon,
Ms. Cziffra, from Mauritius spoke of the ongoing need to analyze the root of problems in order to deepen the human rights of all citizens.
